The True Athletic Grind: Dominican University of California Men's Lacrosse

At one point in their lives, youth athletes reach a point in which they respectfully decided whether or not to take their athletic training to the next level and become a more serious athlete or to step away from the world of sports altogether. Many youth athletes train for years in order to become high school stars, college athletes and in the rarest of occasions professional athletes. Whatever the athletic dream may be, the training starts young and the payoff is always worth the work. Yet once an athlete reaches the coveted level of college athletics the grind never stops. this was the case for the members of the 2017 MCLA Division I Dominican University of California Men's lacrosse team. The majority of the team being long term players who have aspired to become college athletes at a young age, all of the members of the team underwent serious training and are undisputed examples of what the athletic grind is all about. This past weekend the Dominican Penguins Men's Lacrosse team returned early from their winter break to begin 2 a day practices in order to prepare for their 2017 season.

Yet, these young men soon realized that their practices and training would be like none they’ve ever experienced. The Dominican Penguins Men's Lacrosse team would be receiving training from 15 year Navy Seal Veteran Derek Cameron. Cameron, using his military training and expertise, trained these college athletes and showed them what the real meaning of the word team was. The goal of the training was to break down the young lacrosse team, only to rebuild them as an even stronger unit. Day one consisted of training exercises meant to stimulate mental and physical toughness as well as display leadership and attention to detail.

The Penguins learned how important the concept of being on a team was and how to represent the university in which they attend. A unit is only as strong as the leader, and without a strong leader a unit will fall apart, being a part of the Dominican Penguins means that all members are held accountable for each other and that no one is left behind. Day 2 was focused on the athlete's mental toughness and emotional perseverance. From a PT test to a mile and a half run in 40-degree weather, the young men did not quit and picked one another up in order to complete the training at hand. The day 2 workout concluded with a test of trust and intense mental stability. The members of the team would lock arms and walk into the ocean in their swim attire and submerge their bodies under the brisk cold waves. The exercise was meant to develop the mental toughness in each athlete, and by doing so bringing the men closer as a unit. Feeling closer than ever before, the Dominican Men’s Lacrosse Team went into day 3 of training with their heads up high and an eagerness to complete what would be their most arduous feat. The team would be split up into groups of 3 and each team had to complete a series of mental, physical and lacrosse related tasks. From on-field obstacles to a foot race around the Dominican University campus and even a near vertical mountain run, the young men pushed through adversity while leaving no one behind. Now stronger as a unit than ever, and with their season approaching them, these Dominican Penguins learned what the true grind for athletic achievement is really about. Each member of the team coming from different backgrounds, different areas, with different paths, but all found their way to becoming college athletes while never forgetting to grind their way through whatever challenge faced them. With a tough season ahead of them, the grind never stops for the Dominican University Men's Lacrosse Team, each day a new challenge while always taking one step closer to completing a new goal. These men are a true example of what hard work and grit can get you in your athletic career, yet never forgetting that the grind never stops.
