Penguins are Warming Up to Winning

Spring Break 2017, one to remember for the Dominican University of California Men’s Lacrosse Team. After starting off the season 0-6, the SoCal bound Penguins Lacrosse players were facing extreme adversity among themselves, in a panic that the season may have slipped away from the young team. The first official Spring break game took place in beautiful Orange, California on Wednesday, March 8th against the MCLA Division I defending National Champion Chapman Panthers. The Penguins looked strong in the first quarter despite a 4-1 goal deficit. Yet throughout the game the Panthers began to click on all cylinders and ran away with the win with a final score of 12-3, Dominican Freshman Attackman Jonathan Hicks led the way for Penguins with two of the teams three goals. Junior Attackman Michael Manfredi would score the other goal. Although the game was lost, the score did not reflect how well the penguins played, Senior Goalie Max Kaehler finished with a season-best 22 saves as well as an impressive 64.7 save percentage.

After a couple of days off to enjoy the Southern California beaches and scenery, the Dominican Penguins Lacrosse team was back in action on Saturday, March 11 to play the Bruins of UCLA. The Penguins were anxious and eager to win their first game of the season, Junior Captain Michael Manfredi stated “We are not leaving SoCal without a win! I don’t care what it takes.” Strong words from one of the Dominican Lacrosse’s strongest leaders. The Penguins opened up the first quarter in a fast paced manner, setting the tone early against the Bruins. After a 4-1 first quarter lead, the Penguins did not get content and continued to keep the pressure on UCLA. With a final score of 14-8, the Dominican Men's Lacrosse team had won their first game of the season. Junior Attackman Jack Gross was the leading playmaker for the Penguins, scoring 3 goals and recording an impressive 7 assists. Los Angeles native, Freshman LSM Erik Garcia recorded his first collegiate goal in front of his home crowd on an assist from none other than Gross in the Penguins' demanding win. Not looking to let up at all, the Dominican University of California Lacrosse team has a schedule of six conference games left on the season and look to be legitimate competitors for a spot in the WCLL playoffs. The next game for the Penguins will be on Saturday, March 18th against the University of Nevada-Reno @1PM sharp.
